The mistake isn't choosing OEM or aftermarket. It's not having a policy—and letting each order go to whoever quoted lowest. Total cost of ownership includes downtime, labor, and rework. The lowest quoted part can be the most expensive one installed.

3. How do I know if a crane distributor is actually authorized?

Ask to see it. In 2022, I said "authorized distributor" to a vendor and they heard "anyone who can get Terex parts." We discovered the mismatch when the warranty paperwork came back with a third-party trading company's name instead of Terex.

I check three things now. First, the authorization agreement itself—a real authorized Terex distributor can show you documentation, and asking is normal. Second, warranty terms: if the parts come with a clear written warranty, that's a strong signal. If the answer gets vague, walk away. Third, the language. "Authorized distributor" is specific. Read the warranty the way a lawyer would. Does it cover parts only, or labor and travel too? A parts-only warranty looks great on paper until you're paying a technician to travel and replace the "covered" part. Then test parts availability before you buy. Call the distributor and ask for a filter kit for the model you're considering, and ask how long it takes. If the answer is "we'll have to order it," that's a data point, not necessarily a red flag.

Also ask about attachment compatibility. Not all loaders in the same class accept the same quick-coupler standard, and the attachment ecosystem affects resale value. And talk to a service technician, not just the sales rep. The tech who works on these machines daily will tell you which issues aren't in the brochure.

I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. That goes for the vendors I hire, and it goes for me when I answer questions outside my lane.

6. What's the cheapest check that prevents the most expensive Terex crane repair?

Hydraulic oil analysis. If I could make one change to every fleet's maintenance routine, it would be this.
