I handle rush orders for a living. When a Terex crane goes down on a job site, when a parts order arrives with the wrong part number, when a rental fleet finds a maintenance issue at the last minute—I'm the one who finds the fix. In March 2024, a client called at 7 in the morning with a Terex RT crane down forty miles from the shop. Their plan was to "save money" by buying parts from an online supplier at 40% below dealer pricing. The parts arrived. Wrong part number. Wrong mounting bracket. Wrong everything. Look, I'm not here to tell you aftermarket parts are junk. They're not. But here's the thing: you don't know which aftermarket parts are good until it's already cost you time or money. People think cheap parts save money. Actually, it's the reverse—cheap parts can end up costing more because the real expense is the machine sitting still. The causation runs the other way: reputable suppliers charge more because they've invested in traceability and quality control. The price tag isn't the cost.

What I recommend to clients:

  • Safety-critical components—boom parts, hydraulic cylinders, load-bearing assemblies—buy genuine Terex parts. Full stop.
  • Wear items—filters, belts, seals—aftermarket is usually fine, but only from a supplier with a long track record.
  • Electrical and control components—genuine. This is where the bargain almost always fails.

A lot of the skepticism about authorized dealers comes from an era when dealer networks were slow and unresponsive. That's changed. Most authorized Terex distributors run real-time inventory systems these days. In my experience, getting a part from a dealer is often faster than a discount supplier that "technically" has it in stock but needs three days to ship it.

Mobile crane supplier: four questions that save you later

Whether you're buying one crane or a whole fleet, the supplier matters more than the machine. A good supplier keeps things boring. A bad supplier makes your life interesting in the worst way.

When I evaluate a mobile crane supplier, I ask four questions:

  1. Where does your parts inventory come from? If they say "multiple channels" and can't name them, that's an answer.
  2. Can you show maintenance records for every machine? No paper trail means no deal, no matter how shiny the paint is.
  3. What's your typical response time for parts orders? The right answer is a specific number. "Pretty quick" isn't a number.
  4. What happens when something goes wrong? The best suppliers have a procedure. The worst ones improvise.

Why does this matter? Because the gap between suppliers shows up exactly when you don't have time to shop around—when a machine is down and everyone's looking at you for answers.

Bulk used crane deals: the hidden math

Bulk used crane purchases are tempting. The per-unit price drops, the deal feels important, and there's real momentum when you're buying a whole fleet. But here's the counterintuitive part: buying in bulk multiplies your risk if you skip the inspection phase.

You'd think buying five cranes from one seller would be easier than buying one. Same paperwork, same process, same verification. But it's not. Because when you're buying a lot, the seller creates urgency—"I have other buyers interested," "the price goes up next week." The logic of a good deal pulls you forward. And that's when people skip steps.

What I insist on for bulk deals:

  • Independent inspection of every unit. Not a sample. Not "they're all similar in condition." Every single machine gets looked at by someone who isn't getting paid to close the deal.
  • Serial numbers verified against records. You'd be surprised how often this catches a machine that shouldn't be sold at all.
  • Parts availability check per model. If a sensor for that series is obsolete, the purchase price is just the admission fee to a bigger problem.

An inspection needs to go deeper than a walkaround. I mean hydraulic fluid analysis, crawling under the carriage, checking welds and brackets for cracks, testing the load chart and the anti-two-block system. A crane can look "clean" and still have problems that only show up under load.

I also run total cost math: purchase price plus expected maintenance plus parts availability plus likely downtime. The cheapest crane on paper is often the most expensive one in reality.

The first big used crane deal I committed to, I approved the purchase and immediately started second-guessing. What if the inspection missed something? The two weeks between payment and delivery were seriously stressful. It worked out in the end—but I could've saved myself the anxiety by building a buffer into the timeline instead of hoping everything would be fine.

Backhoe loader distributors: what separates the good ones

Backhoe loaders are a different conversation than cranes. They're simpler machines, usually bought by smaller contractors who don't have a maintenance department on staff. That makes the distributor relationship more important, not less.

The most frustrating part of this equipment category: the same issues keep recurring despite clear communication. You'd think written specs would prevent misunderstandings, but interpretation varies wildly between distributors. I've seen a client order three units "with hydraulic quick-attach," and the distributor delivered two with attachments and one without, claiming the spec was ambiguous. After that, we stopped relying on written specs alone. Every distributor gets a confirmation call on critical options before we issue a PO.

Good distributors share three things. They stock parts locally rather than "ordering" them. They have actual service technicians on staff, not just salespeople with a parts catalog. And they ask about your operation before they sell you anything—what you'll be digging, how many hours the machine will run, who's going to maintain it. If a distributor only talks price, that's telling you what you need to know.

Where this advice has limits

I want to be straight with you: there are situations where aftermarket parts make sense. I've recommended them when the safety risk is low and the savings are real. There are also situations where a used crane—even a bulk deal—is the right call. And there are times when a new machine with a service contract beats any used option, because downtime at your site costs more than the price difference.

The point isn't "always buy genuine" or "never buy used." The point is know what you're buying, who you're buying it from, and what it costs to keep it running. A deal that looks too good to be true usually isn't a trap—it's just hiding the costs until later.
