The OEM path usually means authorized dealers, genuine parts, and factory-backed service. The aftermarket path usually means independent suppliers, lower invoices, and more verification work. Both can be right. Both can be expensive.

Here's the comparison I use: it's not “which part is cheaper?” It's “which option produces more uptime per dollar over the life of the part?” Those are different questions. Let me show you why.

Dimension 1: Unit Price Is a Trap, Total Cost Is the Real Number

In 2023, I compared costs across six vendors for a swing brake part on one of our Terex cranes. Maybe seven vendors—one sent a quote and then dropped out. Vendor A, an authorized dealer, quoted $1,180 and said the price included freight plus warranty labor. Vendor B, an aftermarket supplier, quoted $780. I almost went with Vendor B until I built the TCO comparison.

Vendor B's part had $90 freight. It needed a bracket modification that cost $350 in shop labor. Then it didn't seal properly, and the test damaged a $220 component next to it. Total: $1,440. Vendor A's final figure was $1,180. What looked like a $400 saving was actually a $260 loss. That is a 22% difference hidden in fine print.

I'm not sharing that story to scare you. I'm sharing it because “cheaper” is a dangerous word unless you include all the costs after the part arrives. Our procurement policy now requires quotes from three vendors minimum: at least one authorized source, at least one independent source, and always a documented total cost calculation. The policy came from this exact kind of mistake.

Does OEM always win on total cost? No. For a simple wear item on an older machine, aftermarket might win easily. But you have to prove that to yourself with your own numbers, not with a supplier's one-line price quote.

Verdict on this dimension: Lower invoice price is not lower cost. The total cost model is the only fair way to compare.

Dimension 2: Lead Time and Downtime Can Flip the Comparison

Here's the dimension that surprises people: authorized dealers are not always fastest. For common wear items on our Genie lifts, independent suppliers often matched or beat dealer lead times. For an obscure Genie Terex part, the dealer's link to factory inventory was valuable—but it wasn't a guarantee. Availability varies. Anyone who promises “guaranteed in stock” for every machine is being too optimistic. I prefer to check actual inventory before choosing a supplier.

The vendor failure in March 2023 changed how I think about backup planning. We had a critical crane down, a fast-looking aftermarket part in hand, and a job-site deadline hanging over us. The part arrived quickly but was the wrong revision. One critical deadline was missed, and suddenly redundancy didn't seem like overkill. Now, for critical machines, I keep a small stock of key parts even if that makes this month's budget look bad.

We also didn't have a formal process for logging aftermarket part numbers before installation. That gap cost us twice. The third time an “equivalent” part had a different revision than the OEM spec, I created a verification checklist. The checklist: part number confirmed, revision matched, supplier spec sheet attached. In that order. It sounds basic, but it cut our fitment-related rework dramatically.

I should add that downtime has a compounding effect at a small company. A crane sitting still is not just a repair cost. It's lost revenue, unhappy customers, and extra hours from people who have to explain the delay. If a $200 part can save three days of that, the $200 part is cheap.

Verdict on this dimension: For safety-critical or electronically controlled parts, OEM is my default. For simple wear items, aftermarket can make sense when you verify fit before installation.

Dimension 3: Fit, Warranty, and Compliance Paperwork

This is the dimension most people underestimate. We once bought a “compatible” hydraulic part for a Terex machine. The label said Genie Terex parts compatibility. It even said “OEM equivalent.” It wasn't equivalent out of the box; the mounting holes were 4 millimeters off. Our technician caught it during a dry-fit test, which saved us from a bigger failure. The $73 part still cost us $180 in labor. If the tech hadn't checked, the bill would have been much larger.

Per FTC guidelines (FTC Business Guidance), advertising claims need to be truthful and substantiated. So when a seller says “OEM equivalent” or “same as Terex,” I ask for the test report and tolerance data. Sometimes they send it. Sometimes they send a vague spec sheet. That difference is useful information.

Warranty is another comparison point. A genuine Terex part carries dealer-backed warranty coverage that is easy to document. With aftermarket parts, the warranty is only as good as the supplier behind it. If that supplier disappears next year, the warranty disappears too. I don't call every aftermarket warranty worthless, but I treat it as a risk to be priced into the comparison.

Compliance paperwork matters even more with used equipment. Mini excavator compliance requirements are broader than the engine sticker. In many regions, the engine configuration is tied to EPA non-road emission standards under 40 CFR Part 1039, and state/local air districts can add their own rules. If a used mini excavator has been modified with aftermarket parts outside the certified configuration, its compliance status becomes fuzzy. A cheap machine can become a very expensive legal problem.

Verdict on this dimension: Documentation is part of the product. If a supplier can't substantiate “equivalent” or “certified,” price that risk into your decision.

Using the Same Logic for Used Crane Wholesale and Crane Trucks

Used crane wholesale is where the price gap gets even larger. A wholesale deal can look dramatically cheaper than buying through a dealer. But the lower purchase price can disappear if you spend months chasing service documentation, OEM part numbers, or emissions paperwork after the payment has cleared.

When a crane truck supplier sends a quote, I ask the same three questions every time. Where was this truck and crane registered? What do the inspection and maintenance records show? Which parts and service records are included in the price? If the supplier can provide those details, I treat the deal like any other and build a TCO model. If they can't, I add a worst-case estimate for parts, service, and compliance work. That worst-case number is often enough to eliminate the price advantage.

Same logic applies to mini excavators. Just because the machine is small doesn't mean the rules are small. Ask for the original compliance tag, emissions certificate, and service history. If the seller says “it should meet the requirements,” ask them to put that in writing. If they won't, that tells you something.

Which Option Should You Choose?

There is no single winner for every situation. Anyone who gives you one clean answer hasn't looked at enough data. Here is how I decide after six years of tracking orders, invoices, and downtime.

Choose OEM Terex parts and authorized service when:

  • The machine is under warranty.
  • The part is load-bearing, safety-related, hydraulic-critical, or electronically controlled.
  • Your customer requires documented maintenance records.
  • You need the compliance trail for a project bid or a regulated air district.

Choose aftermarket parts when:

  • The machine is older and out of warranty.
  • The part is a non-critical wear item.
  • You have a technician who can verify fit before installation.
  • Your total cost model shows a real saving after labor, freight, and risk.

Choose used crane wholesale only when the seller can produce the machine's serial number, model year, inspection records, and compliance documents—and only after you have checked those documents. For a crane truck, the truck and crane both need a clean maintenance story. For a mini excavator, the compliance package should match the actual machine configuration.

Real talk: my job is not to minimize the price of a part. It's to minimize the cost of the problem the part is supposed to solve. A Terex crane that isn't running earns nothing. A crane truck that's missing paperwork can create liability for years. A mini excavator with a modified exhaust system can be banned from a job site.

The best procurement decisions I've made didn't come from choosing the cheapest supplier. They came from knowing every cost that would land on the invoice after the part arrived. That's the comparison that actually matters.
