But after eight years of handling Terex parts and service orders, I can tell you that anyone who offers a one-size-fits-all solution hasn't been through the failures that make you rethink the process.
Since this is my job, I've had a front-row seat to the bad decisions—my own, and more than a few from customers. I made the classic mistake of ordering loader parts based on price alone. I remember a customer who bought fifteen crane trucks from a supplier with excellent specs and a low bid. On paper, it looked like a win. Then they discovered the supplier's regional parts warehouse was poorly stocked. Every mechanical issue that should have taken a day to solve took twelve. The "savings" from the low bid vanished in the first quarter.
Here's a counterintuitive idea: bigger isn't always better when it comes to suppliers. A regional authorized dealer can deliver faster service because they're closer, have the right parts on shelves, and have an incentive to keep you happy. A global supplier might have more resources, but those resources don't matter if they're halfway around the world.
For bulk purchases, I'd evaluate dealer density, parts turnaround—get the average response time for critical spares in writing—and how easily the fleet can be standardized. If you're choosing a tower crane supplier, ask about setup and teardown support, spare parts availability on site, and what happens if a component fails during peak construction season.
Price matters, but the best bid is the one that keeps your equipment working, not just the one that looks cheapest on the quote.
Situation C: How to evaluate excavator manufacturers without getting burned
This one deserves its own set of rules, because a new excavator is a long-term commitment. Everyone compares horsepower, bucket capacity, digging depth, and walkaway price. But those specs don't tell you what it's like to own the machine for five years.
There's a misconception about why some brands charge more. People assume the higher price pays for better marketing or a name. But often it's the opposite: the manufacturer can charge a premium because their support network and reliability reduce the customer's total cost. The causation runs the other way. The higher price isn't the cause of better value; it's the result of lower total cost of ownership.
Here's an example from our own fleet. We took a machine with slightly lower specs because it had local dealer support with actual parts on the shelf. The other machine had better specs, but the nearest warehouse was six weeks away for most components. During the next three years, the "lower" machine averaged 92% uptime. Based on the parts wait times, the other one would have struggled to hit 76%. In a rental business, a 16% availability difference is enormous.
So, how to evaluate excavator manufacturers? Don't just compare spreadsheets. Calculate the total cost of ownership: purchase price plus scheduled maintenance, probable downtime, and resale value. Visit the dealer's parts warehouse and see what's actually in stock for the model you want. Talk to the repair technicians, not just the sales rep—they know which components fail. And ask for references from contractors who've run the machine for at least 2,000 hours.
The machine with the best number on paper is not automatically the best machine to own. The best machine is the one you can keep running at a predictable cost.
How to decide which situation you're in
If you're still not sure which advice applies, answer three questions: are you replacing parts for a machine already in your yard? Start with Situation A. Are you buying multiple units and there's no established brand loyalty yet? Start with Situation B. Are you choosing a brand to standardize your fleet around for the next several years? Start with Situation C.
There's an overlap, of course. If you find yourself in Situation B or C, you'll still need Situation A thinking later, because parts support will determine whether your purchase was smart. That's why I kept saying the same thing in different ways: look at total cost, not price.
A small confession that changed how I work
