Before you read this: I'm not a mechanic. I've never rebuilt a swing drive, and I can't tell two hydraulic fittings apart just by looking at them. What I can do is buy things—and after five years of buying parts for a mixed fleet, I've learned where the traps are.
I order parts and service for a mid-size company that runs three excavators, a mobile crane, two overhead hoists, and one older rope shovel at our quarry site. In a normal year I move 60 or 70 orders, somewhere between $350,000 and $450,000, across seven or eight vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so I live in the middle: mechanics want parts yesterday, and finance wants paperwork that would survive an audit.
These are the questions I get asked the most. They're also the ones I wish someone had answered for me before I learned the hard way.

Private label usually means another manufacturer's version of a part that fits your machine. Sometimes it's a perfectly good part. Sometimes it's the same factory that makes the OEM part, just without the OEM label. And sometimes it's a box that looks right but has no trackable engineering behind it. You can't tell which one you're holding by looking at the price.
During our 2024 boom rebuild, I went back and forth for almost two weeks on a hydraulic cylinder. The private-label option saved about 30 percent. The OEM Terex cylinder cost more, but it came with a certificate of conformance, a dealer order tied to our machine serial number, and a warranty process I knew finance would accept. Ultimately, I chose OEM because the one number I couldn't price was the cost of doing the job twice.
That doesn't mean I buy OEM for everything. Pins, bushings, and cutting edges come from aftermarket suppliers all the time once I've confirmed the dimensions and the material grade. The line I draw is around parts where a failure means downtime and maybe a safety issue. I learned that line because I crossed it once on a hydraulic filter. The listing called it a direct interchange. I knew I should compare the micron rating to the OEM spec, but the price looked good, so I figured, what are the odds? The odds caught up with us a few hundred hours later when the pump showed signs of contamination damage. The repair cost more than the savings, and then we had the downtime on top of it.

Here's the checklist I keep in our parts folder:
- Rated capacity and whether that capacity is at the hook or includes the trolley or beam
- Lift height and hook travel
- Headroom and mounting configuration
- Hoist and trolley speeds, if travel is required
- Power supply details: voltage, phase, and control type such as pendant, remote, or cab
- Duty cycle: starts per hour, average load, and how many hours per day the hoist runs
The first hoist quote I ever requested left off duty cycle. I thought a 2-ton hoist was a 2-ton hoist. Then the applications person asked how many starts per hour and whether the hoist would run continuously or just occasionally. It turns out the motor and gearbox sizing can change based on how hard you work the hoist, not just how much weight it picks.
If a supplier asks those questions, that's a good sign. If a supplier quotes you a hoist from just 2-ton, 20-foot lift, keep looking.
5. For mobile crane OEM, is the premium worth it?
Out of everything I buy, mobile crane OEM parts are where I compromise the least. A mobile crane is built around load charts, safety devices, and inspection records. That doesn't mean an aftermarket part can never be acceptable. It means you are the one who has to prove it was acceptable after the fact.
I remember approving a brake assembly for our crane and staring at the total. It was roughly double the price of the aftermarket equivalent. I hit submit and immediately wondered if I'd just paid for a logo. What if the cheaper part was fine and I was being paranoid? I didn't relax until the dealer's service tech installed it and the crane's periodic inspection under ASME B30.5 came back with zero findings. The paperwork that said OEM and serial-matched was worth more than the part itself when the inspector asked about it.
I've spent enough time around inspectors to know that mobile crane inspection and maintenance standards expect the crane to match its manufacturer's documentation. If a critical component's history starts with we found a great deal online, that conversation gets harder. I'm not saying every hose, fitting, or wear item on a mobile crane has to be OEM. But load-bearing, brake, hoist, and control-related parts? That's a different category. For an older crane, that documentation is your best friend.
6. What does a superseded part number mean—and why should I ask about it?
Here's the question most buyers never think to ask, and I learned it the slow way: part numbers get superseded. The old number isn't necessarily a scam. It's just old. Manufacturers release updated revisions for real reasons—a metallurgy change, a machining improvement, a fix for a wear pattern they saw in the field.
I once found a new old stock version of a part online for half the dealer price. It looked like the same part. It had the same basic number. The dealer explained that the part had been superseded because of an improved casting, and that the older stock was still floating around in warehouses. It might have worked fine. But I couldn't verify why the supersession happened, and I couldn't trace where that old part had been sitting for years.
Now I ask one question on every quote: Is this the current part number, and is there a supersession I should know about? A good supplier answers without hesitation. A not-so-good one goes quiet. That quiet tells you everything.
